The Snug Clubs
Our first book club for children started in 2022. Rose’s aim with The Snug and its services to the community, is to promote literacy rates and provide one to one nurturing of emotional resilience with children, through the themes explored in skilfully led discussion.
Adult Bookclubs
The Snug Adult Bookclub started on the 7th October 2023. It’s fun, firm friendships have been formed between members, it’s always interesting and provides a vital opportunity for new friends to meet. Books that are selected are varied and the session is always full of energy especially if a book is causing a stir between them.
When: The first Monday of the month, 7-9pm
Venue: The Cherry Tree Restaurant, Olney.
The Cherry Tree stands out as a beautifully restored Grade II–listed building that blends historic Victorian and Georgian features with warm, contemporary design. Set overlooking Olney’s Market Place, it offers Mediterranean‑inspired dishes cooked over Josper charcoal grills and in a striking copper‑clad wood‑fired pizza oven, alongside an impressive selection of cocktails, craft beers, and fine wines. Antique touches, cherry‑themed artwork, and thoughtfully renovated period details create a cosy and relaxed atmosphere, with beautiful rooms that make it ideal for everything from intimate meals to larger celebrations.
Rose encourages all members to suggest titles. This ensures they feel valued and involved from the outset, it ensures full inclusivity of genres, balance in taste and dynamic interplay between members. Rose independently supplements an additional two books a month, as she’s connected to the publisher’s promotions and can suggest new releases that look tantalising. Members receive advance information on all titles from Rose, vote for the book they prefer, then the two titles receiving the majority of preferences are brought to the Bookclub so when members leave the club, they are then in possession of the next book to read over the following month.
Members are connected to each other via The Snug WhatsApp group. They communicate various book-related, published articles, or books of interest they wish to discuss. This works well as although the adult club ages range from 23 to 80, many of our members are of an older generation and live in our many villages outside of Olney. This informal connectivity is good for supporting emotional wellbeing on the quiet weeks in between.
Classic Club – readers choose this group specifically to indulge their senses by immersing themselves in richly descriptive and historic classics like The Count of Monte Cristo ( initially serialised weekly, only published as a novel in 1846).
Adult Contemporary – Our adult club delves within the vast depths of all post1945, international fiction and non fiction. Often cross-cultural, and inclusive of all genres, and with one object… to be immersed in a compelling grip to the end.
Adult Non-Fiction – This group is all about discovery, spanning Politics, Reportage, Environmental change, Biographies, History, Science, and much more.
Books are suggested and chosen by the membership of the club. Rose actively seeks their suggestions as this promotes engagement and fun. There is zero-pressure as Rose always comes full of exciting new book titles and will be happy to propose ideas.
Adult 18-30s Club – Our new 18-30s Club is for the younger adult generation, providing social connectivity whilst delving into the full range of fiction and non-fiction books they choose.
